A Comprehensive Review of Billie Eilish’s New Album: Hit Me Hard And Soft
Billie Eilish is an outstanding musician and her latest album titled Hit Me Hard And Soft is a reflection of her talent. Making it’s debut on May 17th, the super sapphic album has been a huge hit among the LGBTQ+ community and Billie fans alike.
The album features 10 songs ranging from ethereal ballads reminiscing on heartbreak, to pop hits shedding light on BIllies desire to please her love interest.
I suspect Billies future albums will only continue to become more riveting as she continues to explore her sexuality, what makes her tick, and relationships with women.
Before we dive into the review, please be advised this is simply my personal opinion and perspectives on each song will vary. Enjoy the review and let us know what your favorite song is in the comment section below!
Track 1: Skinny
“People say I look happy, just because I got skinny. But the old me is still me and maybe the real me, and I think she’s pretty”
Absolutely LOVE this song. Not only is it relatable but it speaks to the inner turmoil we experience when people make assumptions about how we feel based on external appearance. Billie was tender and transparent with the lyrics of this song, leaving space for interpretation and feelings of self love for her fans.
Track 2: Lunch
“I could eat that girl for lunch, yeah she dances on my tongue, tastes like she might be the one”
If you’re a Tik Tok regular, you’ve probably been a fan of this song from day one. It’s perfect for pride month, the celebration of sapphic rendezvous, and Billies pop vocals. The song is upbeat, fun, and right on time for the summer.
Track 3: Chihiro
“To take my love away, when I come back around will I know what to say”
One of my favorite tracks on the album. Chihiro retells the classic story of the push and pull dynamic that happens when you meet someone who isn’t quite ready to give you their all, even though the connection is undeniable. Fleeting emotions, a slow burn, and indecision are all themes on this track.
Track 4: Birds of a Feather
“I want you to stay, till I'm in in the grave. Till I rot away dead and buried, till I'm in the casket that you carry”
While I’m not the biggest fan of this song, the lyrics are beautiful and create a cool juxtaposition between the light hearted beat and the heaviness of the lyrics. Imagine meeting someone who loves you enough to stay with you until you take your last breath. This song is the embodiment of those feelings.
Track 5: Wildflower
“But I see her in the back of my mind, all the time. Like a fever, like I'm burning alive, like a sign. Did I cross the line?”
Another song that’s become very popular because of Tik Tok! This song immediately brought me to tears the first time I heard it. The beauty in this song is watching so many people connect the lyrics with personal experiences pertaining to loss and love, as well as grieving past versions of themselves. For me, the lyrics are two fold with the constant memory of who I was before life had it’s way with me, and someones essence being burned into the back of my mind.
Track 6: The Greatest
“Man am I the greatest, my congratulations, all my love and patience, all my admiration, all the times I waited for you to want me naked, made it all look painless, man, am I the greatest”
Whew! Talk about a song that’ll send you into a full blown ego death mid listen. Billie did her big one with this song. Another brilliant reminder of how bottled up our emotions tend to be when it comes to disappointment and a lack of reciprocity from people we love. The Greatest is a beautiful ballad that begs us all to not only acknowledge our let downs, but to give the little person inside of you who needs reassurance the most the hug they need.
Track 7: L’amour De Ma Vie
“So you found her, now go fall in love, just like we were, if I ever was”
This track is for the ladies who are still getting over the last fuckboy they had the unfortunate pleasure of interacting with. In the words of my best friend, “the kids move fast honey”. I really enjoy the upbeat, light nature of this song.
Note: Pro tip, people who move on fast are a walking red flag for all parties involved. Avoid them at all costs!
Track 8: The Diner
“I saw you in the car with someone else and couldn't sleep, if something happens to him you can bet that it was me.”
This is my least favorite track on Hit Me Hard And Soft for no particular reason. It’s funny in the way that it speaks to how crazy people can get when the person they have their sights set on ends up with someone else, but overall, the remainder of the album is where Billie really ties things together.
Track 9: Bittersuite
“I can't fall in love with you. I've been overseas, I've been havin dreams, you were in the foyer, and I was on my knees”
And I oop. Insert looking eyes emoji here. This is a SEXY ass song honestly. From start to finish it oozes sex appeal. The beat is flawless and transitions into a melodic secondary track around the 1:30 second mark. The song itself speaks to wanting someone you know you can’t have and doing your best not to fall in love with them regardless of how bad you crave them emotionally and physically.
Track 10: Blue
“I try to live black and white, but I'm so blue, I'd like to mean it when I say I'm over you”
Bittersuite and Blue blend together in a way that’s reminiscent of music like Frank Oceans Pyramids and Beyonces self titled album. They flow together in a way that tells an unforgettable story through melody.
Blue is a brilliant continuation of Bittersuite, giving listeners an earful of nostalgia and heartbreak. Blue is all about understanding why someone isn’t emotionally available and letting them go gracefully.
Hit Me Hard and Soft is fucking awesome if you ask me. If you haven’t already given it a listen, check it out on Spotify and find out here you can catch Billie on tour HERE.
