Seven Questions with Michigan Fern Fest Founder Abra Wise

There is a new musical festival in town hallmarked not only by the music it features. But also by the inclusivity that it offers. Not far from where the famed Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival was held for forty years, Fern Fest is in its third year and proving itself to be a hot commodity for women who want to immerse themselves in music, community, and the new path forward.

“Fern Fest is a music festival specifically curated to drive connection and foster community for women, trans and non-binary folks, and those that live on the spectrum of the feminine spirit.”

This year’s festival takes place July 9-14 and includes performances by Alisabeth Von Presley, Angel Davanport, Bride, DJ all The Way Kay, Fighting Futures, Jes Kramer, Liquid Testimony, Mermaid, Natalia Zukerman, Noemi Rose, Psalm One, Sug Daniels, The Rebel Eves, and Zdan.

Abra Wise, who is a musician herself and who has worked on numerous festivals over the years, is thrilled to see this dream come to life and even more excited to discover just how many others share her vision.

Why found a new festival?

I was inspired to evolve the experience of a women’s festival in Michigan and expand the vision into an inclusive, sustainable space. We want to continue to find our community, specifically women, nonbinary and trans folks, in the context of a music festival and expand access to healing and connection.

It is a priority at Fern Fest to create an inclusive and equitable environment where everyone in our community can show up as their authentic selves. We are on a collective journey to learn and grow together in order to build that space.

Why should someone attend Fern Fest?

Fern Fest is not your average music festival, it’s an experience curated especially for women, nonbinary and trans folks and those that live on the spectrum of the feminine spirit. Attendees will find community, fun, learning and so much more. It’s really something special.

What can a first timer expect?

There is a lot to explore for first timers – rustic camping in a beautiful landscape, amazing performances, engaging workshops. Beyond official programming and activities, you’ll meet incredible people and find ways to create your own unique experience.

What’s the best feedback you’ve ever gotten about Fern Fest?

We’ve heard amazing stories about attending Fern Fest – stories of finding love, deep friendships and self-affirmation. Hearing how impactful it is to be in a space where you feel safe and supported. It’s really an honor to be a part of this experience for so many.

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve discovered since you started Fern Fest?

I’ve been thrilled to discover how invested and generous everyone has been in bringing Fern Fest to life – it’s not surprising as much as heartwarming and encouraging. It’s confirmation that this space is needed.

What do you think might be the biggest misconception about the festival?

I’d say it’s a misconception that Fern Fest is trying to replicate past women’s festivals. We are building our community of women, nonbinary and trans folks with intention and the vision is focused on learning and growing together, not holding onto the past.

What do you wish you could shout from the rooftops about the event?

Join us! Fern Fest 2024 is going to be an amazing and transformative year. We're at a new venue and have another diverse lineup of fantastic stage performances. The week will be filled with opportunities to connect with each other though music, camping, learning, activities and so much more!
