Film & TV: Everything Now Examines Queer Relationships and Mental Health
“And the sick thing they don’t tell you about love is sometimes, it’s all in your head”- Mia
Netflix has done a great job with their original series and inclusiveness in storytelling and casting. Last week they released one of their newest teen dramas Everything Now which to the surprise of many was very queer and very relatable.
The main character of the film Mia is a young lady who returns back home after being sent to a group facility for her eating disorder. Intertwined with the challenges of overcoming her ED is the challenge of figuring out her sexuality along with the dynamics of how it pertains to the way she presents in social settings.
During the series Mia has two separate love interests. The first being Carli. An upbeat, quirky theater girly who’s obviously interested in Mia but confused by their interactions…..said no lesbian ever.
Mia’s second love interest is Alison, the popular Queen Bee on campus who unexpectedly takes an interest in Mia after a drunken night amongst friends. The interesting part of their dynamic is how loving and gentle Alison turns out to be regardless of how she’s perceived by her peers at school.
Mias friend group plays a huge role in the series and her BFF Will also happens to be navigating his sexuality as a queer man who has never been intimate with another man. During the series viewers get to observe Will exploring love and romance for the first time.
Overall this series is heavy and beautifully captured with moments of resilience and humor that leave the audience wondering what will happen next. The writers and actors did a great job organically representing Gen Z and their attitude towards sexuality, social stigmas, and the pressure of growing up in an environment that’s constantly being curated by social media.
