School District in Katy Texas Outs 19 Trans Student to Parents
Transphobia is rearing its ugly head again. This time trans teens in the Katy Independent School District (a suburb on the outskirts of Houston Texas) are the focal point of discrimination.
Houston Landing reports that a total of 19 Trans students within the school district have been outed to their families. Not only is this harmful to students but according to Texas law it’s a violation of the Texas Education Agency’s code of ethics.
This is particularly concerning as it comes directly after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed a legislation barring trans youth from accessing transition-related health care. The entire situation begs the question, is Texas a place Trans people can safely lay roots and build a life?
Houston Texas has a progressive queer scene complete with several LGBTQIA+ oragnizations, a queer neighborhood known as Montrose, and one of the largest pride celebrations in the country. Trans Houstonians have a right to live, not just survive. And they have a right to do it in the city of their choosing.
If you’re in Texas make sure you keep a close eye on the policies being brought to the table during your local election season. Let’s all do our part to make sure our family and friends in the trans community are safe!
